Each lovey is special, and the reasons your child bonds with a certain lovey over another are shrouded in mystery. There are things you can look for to help you choose a lovey for your child, though. We’ve put together a guide to help you choose the perfect lovey for your little one.

Your child will be handling their lovey a lot. As infants, they will grasp the material, and as they get older they will be able to pick up, hold, snuggle, and carry the lovey with them. You’ll want the lovey to be soft so that it is inviting to touch, and to ensure that the material doesn’t irritate baby’s skin. Infancy can be a messy time! Because your baby will be spending a lot of time with their lovey, there are going to be the occasional drips, splatters, and stains. Making sure your lovey is easy to clean can help make sure that it’s ready when your baby needs it, fresh and hygienic. Infants younger than 12 months old should not be left unattended with a stuffed animal or loose blanket to avoid suffocation hazards. Buttons and other hard plastic pieces should be avoided, as they can come off and become choking hazards. Loose clothing and dangling threads and ribbons can also be dangerous.
